Podcast Episode Outline Template

A simple structure you can reuse for solo episodes, interviews, and educational podcasts.

A podcast episode outline is what turns a vague idea into a recording-ready plan. The goal is not to script every sentence. The goal is to remove confusion so you know how the episode opens, where it goes next, and how it ends.

01

Start with the listener outcome

Before the outline, decide what the listener should understand, believe, or do differently after the episode. That outcome should shape the whole structure.

02

Use a five-part episode structure

A practical outline usually fits into five sections that are easy to remember and reuse.

  • Opening hook
  • Why this episode matters now
  • Main teaching points or story sections
  • Summary and key takeaway
  • Closing CTA
03

Write section prompts, not full essays

Most podcasters perform better when they record from prompts rather than dense scripts. Use short bullet points, supporting examples, and one sentence transitions.

04

Shape the hook separately

The hook usually deserves separate attention. It should create curiosity, tension, or urgency fast enough that the listener stays for the main content.

Common questions

Should a podcast outline be a full script?

Not usually. Most creators do better with a structured outline plus talking points, unless the show depends on highly scripted storytelling.
